Star athlete and captain of Almasi Academy’s basketball team, Leo knows what it takes to win. It’s survival of the strongest both on and off the court, and he’s determined to succeed. When his team is invited to the upcoming East African Tournament, he designs a perfect plan to ensure they become the next regional champions.
Unfortunately, no plan is perfect, and his has two serious flaws. The current champions, the Rift Valley Vipers, are as lethal as their namesake and have a reputation for delivering punishing, painful defeat on their opponents. More difficult than the Vipers is what Leo picks from a deck of Safari Cards — the King of Lions.
Leo loves being king until the moment he trips over the face-sized paw of a lion who is no longer inside its card. The lion promises not to eat anyone but refuses to leave until Leo accepts an impossible mission: help the team’s weakest member, a scrawny boy nicknamed One-hand Sam, to play at the tournament. It will almost definitely mean losing the game, but if Leo refuses, the lion will unleash chaos and confusion.
In order to complete the mission, Leo must identify Sam’s inner gems and talents, and reassess his own understanding of leadership and strength. On the other hand, if he wants to defeat the Vipers, he can’t let anything distract him, not even a talking lion and a one-handed basketball player.
But when an injury prevents Leo from playing, he’ll need to think up a new game strategy, or lose more than just a trophy.

Ester is an up-and-coming concert trumpeter and a future winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry … in her dreams. But at least she has clear goals and the work ethic to make her dreams a reality. In order to succeed, she must stay focused and maintain her honor roll status as both a university scholarship and her perfect career are at stake. The class trip to Mt. Kenya is a distraction she neither wants nor needs. Hyperthermia, mountain sickness, exhausting hikes and blisters? No, thanks.
Sadly, no one else shares this opinion. Worse still, she must conduct a research project on the mountain’s environmental issues with students who aren’t taking the assignment seriously. Fortunately, she’s used to completing group reports on her own. Unfortunately, she picked the Queen of Elephants, and it has different ideas about what Ester needs.
After the elephant causes chaos and confusion up, down and around the mountain, Ester has had enough. She wants the peculiar pachyderm out of her life and back in its card. The elephant agrees on one condition. Ester must work with her friends on the assignment without insisting on any of her own ideas.
Supporting other people’s views and encouraging consultation is the only way to free herself of the elephant in the cabin. It’s also a guaranteed path to a bad grade which she can’t afford. But as Ester and her friends struggle with the mountain and with each other, the weather changes drastically for the worst. When heavy fog separates her group from the rest of the class, Ester will need to trust her friends and value their diverse views if they have any hope of surviving the night and completing their research.

Popular and outgoing, Jerusha is well on her way to becoming an important social media influencer. Her @MissNoRegrets account attracts more followers with every new post on fun, fashion and living a life without regret. Fortunately for her, developing new content is easy. Unfortunately for everyone else, her posts sometimes slide from useful life tips to gossip and backbiting.
All of that changes when Jerusha and her friends catch a train to the world-famous Kenyan coast. While everyone else helps to clean up a turtle nesting site, Jerusha figures this is the perfect opportunity to create new content. The major flaw with that plan? In her bag is the Jack of Giraffes, and the Safari Card has its own ideas about what’s needed.
Jerusha has no issue with a talking giraffe, until the long-legged herbivore ruins all of her carefully curated photos. The more Jerusha tries to create content, the more outrageous are the results. If she has any hope of retaining her followers, she will have to agree to the giraffe’s proposal. No gossip, backbiting or selfies allowed on any posts created at the beach. With those limitations, she might as well shut down her account and throw away her phone.
Instead, Jerusha decides to take up the challenge. After all, how difficult is it to make a couple dozen posts devoid of selfies and gossip? The answer — very difficult. Especially when a storm strikes, causing massive blackouts and flooding. Her phone’s dying battery is now the least of her worries as she faces a dangerous reality that threatens to overthrow her ideas of what a life without regret really looks like.
